The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University invites you to apply for the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium: Breast Cancer Achievement Awards program. The Breast Cancer Achievement Awards program will take place in conjunction with the 11th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium (October 1-4, 2009 in Chicago). The program will provide accepted residents and fellows with the opportunity to participate in an educational forum developed specifically for the awardees, as well as attend the 11th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium.

The Breast Cancer Achievement Awards program is an annual opportunity for residents and fellows to ascertain the latest clinical and scientific advances in breast cancer research through their attendance at the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium. In addition to attending the main symposium sessions, the awardees must participate in a forum developed specifically to achieve the Breast Cancer Achievement Awards program’s learning objectives (the forum is scheduled for the morning of Sunday, October 4). The topics of the forum will include case study reviews (contrasting the differences or similarities in the management of patients with various breast cancer disease states) and a discussion of the various career paths available upon completion of training. Physicians from both the academic and private practice settings will present their experiences, recommendations, and guidance on the career paths available to residents and fellows. The program represents an unrivaled opportunity to collaborate with esteemed colleagues in the breast cancer field and meet breast cancer experts from around the world.

Program Objectives

  • Identify the key issues that must be considered when deciding between oncology careers in the academic medicine practice versus the private practice.
  • Describe how one will be judged as a “successful” clinician in both the academic medicine practice and private practice settings.
  • Outline the differences and similarities of breast cancer research in the academic medicine practice and private practice settings.

Program Goals

  • To provide residents and fellows with the opportunity to attend one of the most respected breast cancer meetings in the country.
  • To provide an intimate atmosphere of learning and networking amongst peers in the field of breast cancer.
  • To offer a unique perspective of the different career options available to young physicians.

Award Details
The Lurie Cancer Center will directly fund the awardees’ symposium registration fee and the majority of travel expenses to attend the 3½ day Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium. The funded travel expenses include hotel accommodations at the symposium venue (or alternate hotel determined by the Lurie Cancer Center; 4-night maximum) and roundtrip airfare to Chicago (up to $300 USD). Awardees will receive specific instructions on how to book their travel.
