Chicago Sister Cities Medical Initiative

The Chicago Sister Cities Medical Initiative Program will take place in conjunction with the 13th Annual Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium (September 15-18, 2011). The symposium, which attracts 800 physicians, is an annual professional educational event providing recent clinical and scientific advances in breast cancer research.

The Chicago Sister Cities Medical Initiative Program will provide accepted international physicians with the opportunity to attend the symposium by directly funding the symposium registration fee and the majority of travel expenses. The program is an unrivaled opportunity to collaborate with a world renowned cancer center, to meet experts from around the world, and to learn about practical patient care strategies and the exciting possibilities of breast cancer research.

Eligibility
Physician applicants must reside in one of the 28 cities associated with the Chicago Sister Cities International Program. Applicants must demonstrate a special interest in the field of breast cancer and have a good command of the English language (no translation services will be provided). Only one award will be provided to each of the 28 Chicago Sister Cities.

Program Objectives

  • To provide international physicians access to the latest clinically relevant cancer treatment options to share with patients, survivors, and healthcare professionals abroad.
  • To provide international physicians with the opportunity to attend one of the most respected breast cancer meetings in the world.
  • To provide an intimate forum of learning and networking amongst peers in the field of breast cancer.
  • To offer a unique perspective to international physicians on how breast cancer treatment options are developed and implemented in the United States.

Travel Grant Details
The Lurie Cancer Center will directly fund the awardees’ symposium registration fee and the majority of travel expenses to attend the 3½ day Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium. The funded travel expenses will include hotel accommodations at the symposium venue (5-night maximum) and roundtrip airfare to Chicago. Applicants should not make any travel arrangements until they receive the notification email on July 18, 2011.

Selection Process & Program Chairs
The selection process will be determined by the Symposium Chair, William Gradishar, MD, and the Lurie Cancer Center’s Director of International and Government Relations, Diljeet K. Singh, MD, DrPH.  Selection will be based on the professional reference letter, the applicant’s demonstrated interest in the field of breast cancer, and how the knowledge gained from the symposium will be shared with colleagues.
